I have to believe exploration isn't broken......yet.
It does seem to be extremely buggy ever since the Incarna expansion and has probably been stealth nerfed almost to death.
If it took you 3 hrs to find something else other than w-holes and Grav sites, go to a different area.
As for that combat site you found, try reading the gate message next time. It clearly states what ship class is allowed access. That site allows Frigate, Destroyer Class and their T2 versions.
Obviously there's a few things to remember when it comes to exploration:
Proper Planing Prevents Poor Performance. Expect the worst and hope for the best. Failure is not an option. Evelopedia is info.
And above all else:
Exploration - It's not just an adventure, it's a job.
Seriously, like a job in real life that gives regular base pay for 40 hrs along with overtime pay and bonus pay.
Regular pay is the Radar and Magnetometric sites. Overtime pay is the Anomaly's, 'Unknown' combat sites and hidden DED Complexes. Bonus pay is the Commander NPC spawns at Anomaly's, DED complexes and combat sites along with the Expeditions gained from those.
As an Explorer, you're an 'Independent Contractor' going from system to system doing your job for regular pay, always looking for overtime pay and hope for bonus pay.
You should look at the area you do exploration in as a company. Some areas will have lot's of work available while others barely have any. The trick is to find a few areas or companies that have a lot of work available and make those your dedicated routes which should keep you very busy.
'Tools of the Trade' are high exploration skill levels and top equipment with your ship set up to quickly scan and complete the various exploration sites 'On the Fly' without having to switch ships or refit very often.
Have a 'Base of Operation' centrally located in each area to quickly rearm, refit, switch ships and unload loot asap. Time lost is ISK lost due to a lot of competition, especially on the weekends. Always refer to the Star Map stats when looking for new areas.
Exploration - It's not just an adventure, it's a job.

Been having some truly delicious beginner's luck exploring a circular route of systems on the borders of gal hisec. Expeditions, escalations, radars, gravs, mags the lot, sometimes (GHASP) nothing at all. Loads of faction and deadspace stuff and a lowgrade snake omega, yummy. Above post quoted because it covers important points i have learned the hard way. Attitude is important and it feels much more satisfying and complex than mission running, which can get like mining asteroids that move around a bit. In order to improve my chances though i would like to add: use only the cheapest gear and keep all your stuff in one spot, the travel time swapping ships n fits is not a problem. Multiple signatures are really duplicate readings of the one you already have at 100%, so don't bother with them. Take only your biggest ship into wormholes, don't bother with backup.
